These wonderful musical instruments we are proud to make are called a Tibetan Singing Bowl, but they are not made in Tibet.
The name of these bowls in an homage to the likely place of origin, which is the Bon tradition in Tibet. Modern, handmade singing bowls are made in Nepal and India -- and that's where ours come from, our longtime partners in Kathmandu.
One of the least talked about --- but most important aspects of these singing bowls, is that each is not created the same.
Our founder, Frank Mocerino, talks about this in this video:ย
The choosing of your singing bowl is done with care, with intention, and with a focus on the sound. The partnership of makers and company (like our craftsmen partners and our US based team at the ohm sore) is crucial...
Their role is that expert crafting of these special bowls, often done by 2nd or 3rd generation expert metal workers. Our job is one of curation -- meaning, we only choose the top 1% of singing bowls.
We select our bowls for the best sound, and the best aesthetics.
The best sound is characterized by clarity of sound when struck on the size with a red felt mallet, yielding a wonderful resonance. We also select for bowls that play easily and well around the rim.
While singing bowls like this will always be asymmetrical, we select for the best of the best as far as the looks go.
Too "imperfect" and we don't allow it for sale. It takes both us and our partners to offer the best singing bowls in the world, and it's a delight for us to work on this as our mission in life.
